To blow off steam, playgrounds can be found in various areas of all public parks, with free entry. Check out Central Park, Riverside Park, Tomkins Square Park, and Prospect Park for the perfect picnic spot and tons of playground equipment. Central Park is also a great location to explore with family, highlights being rowboating in the pond, visiting the cherished Belevedere Castle in the Park, and seeing (and taking photos) at Bethesda Fountain.
The Bronx Zoo and The Central Park Zoo are both great parks for animal and nature lovers.
The Bronx Botanical Gardens and Brooklyn Botanical Gardens provide great scenery and a lovely walk for the whole family.
FAO Schwartz on East 59th Street and Toys R Us (which even has an indoor ferris wheel!) in Times Square are popular shopping venues for children.
Children often enjoy walking on the Highline in Chelsea, which has plenty of places to stop and relax on the way and several treats nearby at yummy local locations like Billy’s Bakery and Three Tarts Bakery. Chelsea Market at the end of the walk is also a great, indoor venue to explore with families.
The Brooklyn Children’s Museum, The Children’s Museum of Manhattan, The Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum (located on an enormous parked boat!), The Queens County Farm Museum, and The American Museum of Natural history all offer kid-friendly exhibits and activities. The New York Hall of Science in Queens also offers plenty of hands-on experiences and activities.
Jane’s Carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park is a classic amusement and offers a great photo opportunity. Nearby, the family can walk around DUMBO and taste several local bakeries and candy shops.
Riding the Staten Island Ferry in a loop is a great way to observe the skyline and see the Statue of Liberty, avoiding long lines and walking.
In the summer, takes the ferry over to Governors Island for historic tours, mini golf games, picnics, bike rides, festivals and more.
The Moxie Spot in Brooklyn is a hipster’s version of Chuck E. Cheese- filled with great menu options for kids and adults alike as well as events, toys, and diversions for kids while parents chow chow down on spicy Thai chicken wings.
For kids in search of a bit of adventure, Coney Island is New York City’s hotspot for rollercoasters and other fast-paced attractions. A beach area on the boardwalk is also a nice spot to relax.
Time Out New York: Kids is also a great magazine to check out for weekly listings about children’s events and activities!
